Who We Are
Shelby Coates
Trident’s founder is a former Unites States Naval Officer and ocean shipping executive. It was, however, the memories of a keenly enjoyed three-week Caribbean crewed yacht charter which drew him to this business. The chartering group boarded their 71-foot schooner at Grenada, known as the “Isle of Spice,” and sailed north through the Windward Islands chain with visits ashore at the Tobago Cays, Mustique, St. Vincent, St. Lucia, and Martinique.
Next, they continued north into the Leeward Islands chain–leaving Dominica and Guadalupe abeam to starboard–finishing the voyage at historically famed Nelson’s Dockyard, English Harbour, Antigua. The individualized histories and cultures of these differing islands, but collectively described in Alec Waugh’s leading travelogue as “The Sugar Islands,” were savored and added a valued learning experience to an exhilarating three-week sail.
Shelby brings to the table knowledge and appreciation of the world’s prime cruising venues. His wide travels have included blue water sailing and a five-month circumnavigation of the globe. He is presently a member of the U.S. Naval Institute and the Cruising Committee of Sagamore Yacht Club, Oyster Bay New York,

When I was a kid, there was a television program called Adventures in Paradise. It was about a man who had a beautiful sailing vessel that he lived on. He supported himself by offering charter trips on the boat. I thought I would love to do that when I grew up. Well it never happened. However, my father had a cabin cruiser and we took many wonderful trips on it along Long Island Sound and up to Block Island and Martha’s Vineyard, which I loved.
I ended up, after living abroad and extensive overseas travel, a New York City high school teacher, a very challenging job. I moved to beautiful Oyster Bay over twenty years ago. When I retired from teaching I became a real estate agent. Meeting Shelby and joining him in the charter business brought back all my youthful yearnings. I realized I could adapt my abilities in finding perfect homes for people to finding perfect yacht charters for them.

When I was going through a troubling period in my elementary school life oh so many years ago, a perceptive teacher placed in my hands Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham. It opened up to me a wondrous, adventurous world of exotic lands and languages and the magnificent ships which could take us there.
Over a long career in education I hope that I have set many young people on such romantic voyages. Now, as a member of the Trident Maritime Services team, I hope to launch you on your own Sea of Dreams on one of the magnificent vessels from our worldwide “library.”
