Cruise Ship vs. Yacht Charter

Upon hearing about the cruise ship accident in Italy and seeing the photos on TV, all I could think about is how frightening the episode is.  I went on a cruise, once, and that was enough.  I used to watch the old movies and  drooled over the scenes where the characters were on cruises.  It looked so lovely and so civilized.  My own experience was nothing of the sort.  I chose what I believed to be the smallest cruise ship available, but it stillcarried 1300 guest and who knows how many staff..  It was like a big hotel.  You hardly felt as though you were on a ship.  I just can’t imagine how I would have felt if there had been an accident.  My daughter was in a separate stateroom and didn’t spend much  time with me.  How would I find her in all the chaos?  Should I try to get to safety myself and pray she was doing the same thing, or should I stay until I was sure she was safe?  And how would I know?

It seems to me, that in addition to all the other advantages of sailing on a yacht over a large cruise ship is the element of safety.  It is much easier to keep track of and tend to maybe up to 15 people than it is for 1300 or up to 4000 which is how many people the large cruise ships carry.

  1. I agree with you completely. Unless you are traveling alone and want interact with many people, yacht charter is far superior to cruising for many reasons;safety is only one.

    • Absolutely. The idea of being confined on a ship with 5,000 others is scary. A friend of mine said it’s like being incarcerated. If you want to meet people, you can do a cabin charter on a yacht. With regard to health issues, I just read an article in today’s Newsday that “about 250 passengers headed to South Florida have been stricken with a gastrointestinal illness.
